OUTLINE OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM PROGRAMME

Objectives of the Department in the training of the Undergraduate Students

The postings / lectures in the two specialties in Child Dental Health are designed to enable the students achieve the following objectives:

  • Acquire the scientific, biologic and pathologic knowledge of health and diseases of the oral cavity in the context of the whole being.
  • Understand the proper guidance of the growth and development of the craniofacial complex of the growing population.
  • Acquire the knowledge and skills required to diagnose, prevent and treat malocclusions, diseases and malformations of the oral cavity in children, adolescents and even adults in cases of orthodontic care.
  • Guide the developing occlusion and acquire the skills in the treatment of developing malocclusion
  • Provide total quality health care for infants, young children and adolescents- early diagnosis of the disease and treatment, correct existing oral problems (halt their progression) and to prevent anticipated future problems, as well as giving adequate attention to the psycho-social development of the growing population.
  • Sensitize the students on the need to contribute to knowledge through quality research activities in future.

PAEDODONTICS

Objectives of this undergraduate curriculum in Paediatric dentistry

The programme in Paedodontics should prepare the students to:

  • Develop a positive attitude and behaviour towards children thereby establishing a dental home.
  • Provide total quality health care for infants, young children and adolescents
  • Diagnose oral diseases early and treat
  • Correct existing oral problems (halt their progression) and to prevent anticipated future problems
  • Cultivate an interdisciplinary management approach in the care of children (ie collaborating with other specialties such as Paediatrics)

Expected Learning Outcomes and Competency Statements

  • They should be able to manage the behaviour of a child patient
  • They should be able to differentiate between primary and permanent dentitions
  • Students should be able to make diagnosis of common oral conditions in children
  • They should be able to develop a properly sequenced treatment plan; i.e. emergency, preventive, restorative and rehabilitation treatments.
  • They should be able to carry out treatments in children
  • They should be able to restore lost tooth structure and maintain harmony between the hard and soft tissue.
  • They should be able to counsel parents and children on prevention of dental diseases.

ORTHODONTICS

Objectives of this Undergraduate Curriculum in Orthodontics

This programme in orthodontics should prepare the students to:

  • Anticipate and detect incipient malocclusions
  • Provide counselling and preventive measures where possible based on good understanding of occlusal developmental milestones
  • Recognise conditions which require advanced orthodontic diagnosis and treatment by an orthodontic specialist
  • Understand the possibilities of comprehensive orthodontic treatment
  • Observe and assist in a variety of orthodontic procedures including separator placement, banding, bonding of brackets and debonding
  • Understand clinical application of orthodontic radiographs
  • Understand the principle of interdisciplinary treatment
  • Use orthodontic principles as an adjunct to treatment procedures in all other phases of dental practice
